Trees down, Trees in, Status Quo restored
The Extended Outreach group and their leaders have been working with the NAC Garnock Valley Ranger to replace fallen trees at the Spier's Old School grounds with new and interesting species.
Two Whitebeams (Sorbus aria) were planted for their visual appearance and their status as one of the parents of the rare Arran Whitebeam (Sorbus pseudofennica). Two Turkey Oaks (Quercus cerris) were planted as specimen trees and hosts of the exotic Knopper Gall. Four Ginko or Maidenhair trees remain to be planted.
The group put up a bird box, kindly donated by Cisco Haro, a professional wood turner who supports Spier's and its events. A plastic compost bin has also been donated by Ewan Denovan from the Friends of Spiers and will be used to produce compost for the groups vegetable garden.
