Spier's boundary wall restoration at Geilsland Road
A volunteer working with the NAC Garnock Valley Ranger at Spier's Old School Gounds is carrying out a skilled restoration of the old boundary wall along the Geilsland Road.
The Friends of Spiers have removed the ivy which covered much of the wall and it was found that a number of the whinstone coping stones had fallen and sections of the wall were in danger of collapse.
Derek Graham has been working as a volunteer with the NAC Ranger Service at Eglinton Country Park and he decided to help at the Spiers outstation as well.
One of the first jobs was to remove plant growth that undermines or damages the wall, followed by cleaning the whinstones and finally cementing them back together so that they stand for at least another century.
Volunteers are always need at Spiers and the Friends of Spiers also meet on the first Saturday of every month between 11am and 3pm. Contact Eglinton Country Park for details.
