Snap, it's Gateside Activities Afternoon
The eco-activities at Gateside Primary School have had an eclectic wildlife studies session with the NAC Garnock Valley Ranger on the main theme of garden birds.
The pupils were shown albino, variegated and Highclere holly, the latter being the real 'Downton Abbey' of the TV series. The berries are eaten by birds, especially after the frosts render them more palatable.
The group made starling paper bird 'snappers' and then paper Origami 'Fortune Tellers' listing garden bird species found at Gateside school grounds, such as robins, blue-tits, wrens, starlings, chaffinches, greenfinches, sparrows, pigeons, etc.
A future theme is light and the energy from the sun. Pupils were introduced to this topic through being shown a tinder box with its contents, such as charcloth, lichen, feathers, and a magnesium striker.
As a reward for such hard work the group were paid, using edible money from Sweden printed on rice paper!
