Progress at the Vale Grove and Barrmill Park
Twenty-one Barrmill Communities Projects Initiatives (BCPI) volunteers attended the first workday of 2012 at the Vale Grove and Barrmill Park, working to still further enhance the biodiversity and amenities of this community greenspace.
Joyce was the group leader for the day, shadowed by Carrick and Jean Gilbert worked with the kitchen team of Jessie, Margaret F, Joanna, and Katy.
Mark built a compost bin to supply the grove's flowerbeds. Christine removed rubbish and cut back vegetation from the sides of the Vale Burn. Joyce with her team of four young helpers removed three bin bags full of litter from the areas beside the burn. The young BCPI's later made up seed and fat balls, placing these throughout the Vale Grove.
Rosie dug out the ditch draining water from the waterfall, later helped by Lynda, Julie and Margaret M, who spent the morning digging out brambles, planting out wildflowers, and creating a new hedge with Carrick.
Billy, Paul, and Jamie built a wooden seat in the grove and then started the construction of a new fence at the site of the new hedge being planted at the top of the Ginger Hill. Andy spent the day creating a disabled access into the vale Grove.
A lunch of soup, sandwiches, rolls and hot drinks restored the groups' energy levels and a high tea at 3pm sent volunteers home tired, but well fed.
The NAC Garnock Valley Ranger advised and assisted the team. BCPI meet on the second Saturday of every month.
