Progress and Discoveries at Spier's
The Extended Outreach (EO) Group and their leaders are working with the NAC Garnock Valley Ranger to create an allotment at Spier's and are at present building a path to the site.
The EO members have cleared the area of vegetation and are now building a path to the site from the shelter/store.Trees are being cut back and the path created with a layer of limestone chips.
The preparatory habitat survey for the path revealed a surprising number of scarce and significant species in the area, namely the Scarlet Elf cup fungus (Sarcoscypha austriaca), the Creeping Jenny flower (Lysimachia nummularia) and the Wood Sedge (Carex sylvatica). These are being protected and their locations and presence recorded on the NBN Database.
These three species are all indicators of old woodlands, further confirming the ecological significance of Spier's Old School Grounds.
The EO Group were presented with a certificate from the Freinds of Spiers for planting eight 'Celebratory Trees' of three species in the park's arboretum, namely Turkey Oaks, Common Whitebeams, and Maidenhair Ginkos.
