Natural History Lessons at Work
The Extended Outreach Group have been picking up more natural history knowledge whilst constructing a path to the 'Blood, Sweat & Tears' allotment that they are creating.
The lads were busy wheelbarrowing pathing materials and creating an edging with fallen trees. All this activity attracted three local robins who, being highly territorial, were aggressively disputing the 'feeding rights' at what proved to be the invisible boundaries of their territories. Frequent vocal and physical skirmishes were the result.
You can map Robin territories using a stick with 'robin red' cottonwool attached. Just keeping moving it around your garden and record on a map which robin attacks it!
The fascinating Yellow Brain Jelly or Witch's Butter (Tremella mesenterica) was found growing on dead birch trees nearby.
