ON Friday, Jordan Fernando, 13, from Beith North Ayrshire will line up with second-year girls at St Matthew's Academy in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, for her HPV injection.

She will be one of the most clued-up teenagers on the cervical cancer prevention programme.

Jordan's mum Suzanne, 38, almost died in childbirth when docs found a large tumour blocking the baby's arrival.

She lost blood, slipped into a coma and only gruelling, intensive chemotherapy managed to shrink the cervical tumour.

For two weeks, it was touch and go as husband Kes, 39, looked after newborn daughter Aaron, and four-year-old Jordan.

Suzanne praises the HPV injections as a life-saver for young women. She said: "Jordan knows she nearly lost her mum and NOTHING would persuade her not to have the injection. Girls who are well informed should be able to make that decision.

"It's not an ideal situation when parental views differ from the child's. The family should discuss the pros and cons and if the child is still unsure, they can ask more questions at school.

"This treatment will save the lives of women."
