Grass verge project pays dividends
The grass verge opposite Craig House and running down towards Brighouse on the Powgree Burn has been the site of a NAC biodiversity project involving Streetscene (Grounds Maintenance) , the Ranger Service and the Environmental Policy Officer.
The Garnock Valley Ranger has carried out regular animal and plant surveys and this has shown the benefit of leaving the 'meadow' alone to set seed, provide shelter and food for insect larvae, etc.
A significant discovery has been the Hawthorn Button-top gall caused by the fly Dasineura crataegi. This is a southern species which has not been recorded in Scotland before, let alone Ayrshire. More evidence for Global Warming?
