Bees benefit at Spiers Old School Grounds
Youth Making Beith Better (YMBB) have been constructing artificial bee nesting sites to encourage the rarer and more unusual solitary bee species. Many of the different types of bee species have been declining in the countryside and this project will give them a helping hand at Spier's parklands. Easy to make, these bee 'nests' are constructed from bundles of bamboo sticks with the insides hollowed out.
The new Spier's information board made by YMBB is now in place at the main gate on Barrmill Road. It has posters on it encouraging the use of the grounds which were made by YMBB and the Beith Out of School Care group.
YMBB hope to create a 'blaze of colour' in tubs and flowerbeds at Spiers this year and have been busy planting seeds and bulbs of Nasturtium, Lobelia, Iris, Pansy, Marigold, flowering Garlic, Celandine, and others.
