The Shrine Stone of Crummock
Mr Dobie of the old Crummock House in Beith was a noted Victorian historian and collected old relics of Ayrshire's past, including the 'Shrine' stone.
The North Ayrshire Heritage Centre in Saltcoats has this stone in it's care after it was taken from the old walled garden at Crummock at the time of it's demolition.
The stone, broken in two unequal pieces, has a clearly carved horse on it, being held by a standing figure. Above are carved what appears to be the tools used by a mason.
It isn't recorded where the stone came from or what it represents..
Does anyone know anything about this stone? Other carved stones were also taken at the same time - nothing is known about them - again can anyone provide any details?
