The Cuff, the Gibsons and a marriage stone
Margaret Gibson was the wife of Robert Spier and mother of the John Spier for whom 'Spier's' was named. Margaret came from the Cuff Estate. All of her ten children predeceased her and being without an heir, she sold her Cuff and Marshalland estates to fund the construction of Spier's School.
The Cuff site still has remnants of its past grandeur, with ostentatious gates and gateposts, beech tree lined avenues and a rare marriage stone, rescued from a now demolished mansion house that may have stood in a nearby field. The worn stone, seems to be marked with 'MG IG 1767', recording a family marriage; it would have originally been built into the couples home. The 'G' is presumably for 'Gibson' and the 'I' could be for 'James' from the Latin, 'Iacobus.'
