Quod Verum Tutum
This is the Latin motto of the old Spier's School on Barrmill Road. The motto translates as 'What is true is right (or secure)' and was chosen by the Spier family for the school, being used on the official Seal of the Board of Governors, on the school uniform, school magazine, etc.
The motto is anonymous in origin, however it is in use elsewhere, such as by the Courtney family, Earls of Devon.
After the school closed a sandstone slab or panel, carved with these words was rescued from the school grounds after having been shattered. The slab was preserved at the Old Stables Museum in Kilbirnie, however after this closed some years ago the Friends of Spiers (FoS) became guardians of the Spier's motto panel.
The panel had originally been placed on a raised flowerbed at the old Tennis Courts and was probably created to commemorate the 75 Anniversary of the establishment of Spier's School in 1888.
FoS hope to place the repaired motto slab back in the grounds at some point in the future, possibly at the restored Coronation Garden.
