Crooked Dam farm and Broadstone

by Roger Griffith
  • The site of the Crooked Dam farm and the mill pond.

Crooked Dam farm once sat beside the Powgree Burn near Broadstone Bridge on the Geilsland Burn, just below the Fairy Glen. The 'dam' suffix suggests that a flour mill once existed here, probably associated with the old Broadstone Castle, as most old feudal Baronies had a mill to which the locals were 'thirled' or forced to take their cereals for grinding, a proportion being kept by the miller by way of payment for his services.

Roger Griffith says

The 1895 OS map shows the crooked angle of the wall and mill dam that once cut across the Powgree Burn at the Broadstone Bridge, creating a mill pond above.

Part of the field wall running parallel to the burn close by is mortared, whilst the wall further up is a drystone dyke, suggesting that this wider structural section is the surviiving 'splash wall' of the mill and once carried the waterwheel which drove the grindstones.

Roger Griffith says

A gap in the mortared wall at Crooked Dam corresponds to the position of an old footbridge which allowed access across the Powgree Burn to a footpath once ran from the Geilsland Road up towards Broadstone Hall, following the line of the field dyke.

The old Crooked Dam Farm above Broadstone Bridge would have originally been the miller's house and is not even marked on the 1895 map edition.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
